Once I was a back dancer for Kylie Minogue
It was a one-off show at the Brit Awards in 2002 when Kylie won Best International Album. The single, "Can't Get you Out of My Head" was her big hit in early 2000. There wasn't much interaction with her, but Kylie was sweet, the work with choreographer Rafael was wonderful, and the atmosphere between the dancers was very nice.
Unfortunately, it didn't remain in my head as a completely happy memory. It was of course before #MeToo, before the Weinstein scandal, and we (especially the women) were treated quite awfully by either Kylie's manager or the Brit Awards organizer and his assistants (not sure who they were exactly) from the very beginning of the rehearsal. Also, because I am Asian, I felt that I was being looked down even more. They were just not nice.
In one episode, just before the performance, we back dancers had to wait for 30 minutes (or more) outside in the cold for some reason. In addition, we were instructed to take off our warm-up clothes. We dancers couldn't say anything, and had to communicate with each other with eye cues. One male dancer said, "We can't dance after freezing like this," and he started to fight with the manager/organizer guy. That was my friend, Fabrice, and I will always be grateful to him for his courage in standing up to them.
After this experience, I told myself, "I will never do a pop project again." Now times have changed and if you encounter such a situation, you can record it on your phone and publicly expose this kind of abuse. So, I guess If someone wants me now, I think I am open to do pop again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG1y5gWin5c
